VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

VoIP is a technology for making telephone calls using the internet instead of the traditional network of landlines. It’s fully integrated with other systems, so calls can be made in just the same way to landlines, mobile phones and other VoIP users. It works by converting a voice signal to digital format for transmission over the internet and reversing the process at the other end.

To use this technology, you only need to have VoIP-enabled telephones, an internet connection and a VoIP account with a call number.

VoIP has many benefits, particularly for small to medium-sized companies operating from more than one location or with remote workers.

More cost-effective

  • VoIP uses your existing internet connection so there’s no need for two separate networks.
  • Regardless of number of locations and users, you can have just two lines (incoming and outgoing), with extensions, and pay a monthly rental on each line.
  • Calls to other VoIP users, including between your offices and to homeworkers, are free.
  • Calls to landlines and mobile users are competitively priced.
  • VoIP includes a number of features which would normally carry extra cost, such as voicemail, call forwarding, automatic redial and conference call facilities.
  • Cost of expansion or change is lower as VoIP is based on software, which is easy to alter and reconfigure.

Other benefits

  • Integration into Microsoft Outlook: users can make calls, control incoming calls and view call history from a toolbar on Outlook and Internet Explorer.
  • Improved integration for remote offices/workers: Call hunt groups can include remote offices or people working from home.
  • Easy to use and flexible: all phones can be pre-configured prior to delivery; users are easily added or removed from the system.
  • The service can be installed onto VoIP-enabled mobile handsets.
  • Customers can easily upgrade to more advanced applications.
